Tough, pale-eyed, attractive, Phil Burbank is cruelly seductive. Phil’s entire romance, power and fragility has been captured in the past and in the countryside: he can castrate a bull with two quick stabs of a knife; he swims naked in the river and smears his body with mud. He’s a cowboy as strict as his skin. The year is 1925. The Burbank brothers are wealthy farmers in Montana. At Red Mill, on their way to the market, the brothers meet Rose, the widow, and her easily influential son Peter. Phil acts so cruelly that he makes them both cry, relishing their pain and making his neighbor laugh – all but his brother George, who comforts Rose and then returns to marry her. As Phil oscillates between anger and cunning, his mockery of Rose takes on a sinister form – it rises to the edge of her gaze and whistles a song she can no longer play. His mockery of her son is more overt, reinforced by how Phil’s shepherds rejoice. It looks like Phil is taking the boy under his wing. Is this last gesture a placement that puts Phil at risk, or a conspiracy that continues to grow into a threat? Netflix
